Trash Sculptures by Arolando Depict African Slave Trade

The Beginning of the End of History is an exhibition by Roland Akouèdénoudjè, who is also known as Arolando. He is from Benin. Using sculptures made from trash, the artist draws parallels between the recycled materials and the “triangular trade” of slaves and material goods between Africa, the Americas, and Europe. It is odd to see faces that mimic traditional African masks but use recognizable modern items, such as remote controls, aluminum cans, and pieces of plastic. I think the sculptures are fascinating to look at, and I think the history of slavery is important to learn and remember, although deeply disturbing.
